An online calculator for predicting severity of COVID-19 infection has been developed in Johns Hopkins University in the US. Using the data available on admission, the model predicts in-hospital COVID-19 progression to severe disease or death¹. The predictive accuracy of outcome was best for the first 2 days of hospital admission but provided useful estimations for days 4 and 7 as well. CRP concentration is one of the predicting factors as it is easily available and has shown to be significantly related to COVID-19 disease severity.² ³
The COVID-19 Inpatient Risk Calculator (CIRC) is based on the multicenter study of consecutive 832 patients in five hospitals in the Maryland and Washington, DC area (US) that comprise the Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) health care system. Early identification of patients that will develop severe disease is important for right clinical decisions and resource allocation.² Especially now that the second wave of COVID-19 is upon us, there is a need to have prediction models for efficient usage of ICU resources and for saving lives.
